I came across a post on social media this week that talked about how you’re limiting yourself if you only read one genre of book… and as someone who almost always picks a psychological thriller over anything else, I felt a little called out.
I read a lot as a child then stopped in high school/ college because life got busy. When I started again a few years ago, I didn’t know what kinds of books I liked. I would read whatever was suggested to me, and even if I hated it, I would finish it. Which is… crazy? I’ve finally gotten to a point where I’m comfortable DNF’ing a book. I do try to give it a chance- I read about 100 pages, and if I’m not hooked by then, I stop.
I learned pretty quickly that I love murder mysteries/ psychological thrillers. It felt weird to not love romances/ dark romance like everyone else seemed to, but it’s just really not my style. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good smutty scene. But I love plot and character development more. I truly do not want to read page after page of nothing but sex.
So what are your opinions? Do you think finding a genre you like and sticking to it is limiting? Or do you think reading is supposed to be fun, and making yourself read things you’re not interested in takes the fun away?
